Have you ever wondered about why we use the traditions that we do on our special day? Today, we're breaking down famous wedding traditions that are almost unanimously used at weddings across the country!
Bridesmaids didn't always have similar dresses to each other in a different color from the bride! In fact, bridesmaids used to wear white just like the bride. They did this to protect their bride from exes and confuse evil spirits. In the early Victorian era, it was popular for bridesmaids to wear white dresses with short veils. After the turn of the 20th century, however, this trend fell out of popularity. This NC wedding venue couldn't make something like that up!
Similar to bridesmaids, there's an interesting origin story accompanying the tale of the best man. Thought to have originated with the Germanic Goths of the 16th century, the best man's job was tasked with stealing the bride from her community! Other origin tales suggest that the Best Man was the one who protected the bride before arriving to the wedding. Obviously nowadays, this is no longer the job of the best man.
This trend dates back all the way to Ancient Greece! These Grecian brides would carry a bouquet of herbs to ward off evil spirits. Nowadays, brides tend to go for something a bit more romantic!
Arranged marriages used to be extremely common throughout all of history. Many times, these marriages were arranged to gain status, alliance, or military power with the union of two suitors. Many times, this 'first look' was genuinely a first look at who they were to marry!
Having the bride accompanied by a child was meant to symbolize a fruitful union. It was good luck for the bride to be led by a child throwing petals in the pathway. Some thought that this tradition was a sign of good fertility luck. Today, many just include this bit for the adorable pictures, and our NC wedding venue can't blame them!
